Sara Lee/DE and Philips: Senseo coffee machine

Faced with declining coffee consumption, the board of Douwe Egberts initiated a wide range of innovation projects under the collective code name Decathlon. The key words in this drive were individualisation, ease of use and quality.

WeLL Design was asked to take on the Senseo project. Our assignment included project leadership and sourcing from the manufacturer. Taking the Crema system developed by Douwe Egberts and the original product design from WAACS as our starting points, a team of five people spent two years developing the Senseo Crema machine down to the finest detail. Ten prototypes were then produced in partnership with the Chinese manufacturer, before being handed over to Philips.

As a result of that effort, almost 20 million people in dozens of countries now enjoy Senseo Crema coffee.
